So I couldn't remember if I had uploaded this or not, & since I've been offline for so long I thought I should put up some stuff I've done. This is from 2012. It was a species I worked on for kyoto chronicles. Oh & wow to the new DA upload system O.O. It looks better than the old one & is much easier to look at, but I wasn't expecting it.
Anyways for those of you who might be curious, if you pay close attention to the anatomy, this creature is a mix mostly between birdlike creatures such as an eagle in the head, the body structure is that of a canine build (especially in the paws & if you notice how the stomach curves up towards the back leg, that isn't as pronounced in felines as it is canines, which is how you can tell the difference easily) & the tail was inspired by birdlike features, but overall it's just sort of made up.
I can tell you've worked pretty hard on this piece - Your use of lighting and smooth fur transitions shows you took your time on this piece and made sure every detail was correct.
Your vision for the creature is astounding to me; all the anatomy seems to make sense, and the skeleton I can imagine would be realistically proportioned and able to support the body of it. You clearly specified a light source, and the way light contours to the beast's body shows features one may not see from an non-shaded version. You seem to have an excellent grasp on how to realistically combine animal anatomy parts; everything from the paws to the beak to the bright feathers are well-chosen and complement each other... While still making anatomical sense.
The piece's originality is fairly good. It reminds me mostly of a griffin or hippogriff rather than an original creature, but it's still a fairly original idea, and I'll give you that. What I do like is the strange fur-like feathers the creature seems to have. That adds an extra touch to its originality and makes you think about how something like that would work.
Your technique was just as excellent as your vision. This is a style of painting/drawing I often see but don't usually like all that much. However, you were able to present and perform this style in a much more detailed and beautiful form than other works, which some can appear flat and rather 2D. The lighting effects present a clever feeling of 3D depth, and it gives the piece more detail into the correct anatomy of the creature.
Impact was pretty good, I've definitely got a new style to strive for when making creatures (Which, I haven't actually got around to putting effort into).
Overall, great piece, wonderful style. I find myself secretly wanting to ride one of these...
Looks great; good texturing, lighting, but design-wise I'm not too sure about the bright green feathers in its hindquarters. Still, much better than I could do. Well done!
